TRAVEL: The Sierras, Day 4, Virginia Lakes Hike

The sun backlights the turning leaves
They hold all joyful farewell

The lakes are  dark brooches
securing the violent masses
of deep reposeful rubble

Snow frills on the shaded slopes
Snow lines showing the high thin clouds how to do it
I see far into another state
Another place but I am already there
The summit pass high and remote
The mad wind is determined now,
it will bring deep snow
not to be dissuaded by human dread
Rush down the creek aspens of gold
There is a meeting here tonight

Come down to the high plateau and see the sere evening begin
elusive and aging slowly
Change from the lavender day dress
to black velvet for night.
